.........................mmmm,......interesting..............
...........................................'interesting' can be another way of saying 'actually rather dull yet complex with hidden depths which will remain so because I'll never be drawn to listening again unless i stumble across it in the library, listen for a minute & move on, thinking 'interesting' '..................
Anders Holst / Mads Emil Nielsen by Anders Holst / Mads Emil Nielsen isn't 'interesting' in that sense - no - it's actually interesting, to these ears anyhow.............being organic-yet-mechanical, improvisatory yet obviously thought out, if not exactly composed - who knows? & I'm adverse to guitars, as long-term readers will know - why remains a mystery even to me.........................
but............................
perhaps I heard to many overs the years before I locked myself in every night - you know - watching old-fashioned bands..................
..........................................................................................................(they are old-fashioned, aren't they? that idea of people getting together to strum tired riffs & sing pointless lyrics etc, whereas studio music is, I'm sure you'll agree, in perfect keeping & reflective of our internalised lives lived in our studio heads at the controls (keys) of technology connecting mind to outside world.......)..................
.........................................................................................................................please don't ask what I mean because my brain's currently being swept by a track from this album called Radiant/Quadrantid....so good I have to play it again............
........................I spoke of disliking guitars............unless, you see, they're used in the way Anders Holst uses his, but then, he is also a 'sound artist' & therein lies the world of difference, the cause for paying attention to & exploring an interest in textures & tones - yes - although, as on Three Steps Around the Room, he's also happy to forge high plains drifter fuzzy twangs........in space............which is great, because grounded by old-fashioned drum & bass, for instance, they would be little more than a much-used method of geeter evocation whereas here the harmonised elements of old electronic earth & the mechanical cosmos are something else, something from Out There.............which sums up the whole album, a fusion of electronic dreams old & new, ancient (as in Rock) to the future, minus the 'Rock'........& with great success due in no small part to the equally interesting electronics supplied by Mads Emil Nielsen..........good stuff.....
